Couple of Days revs up romance genre

Couple of Days

Where two or three couples are gathered, rancour is in their midst, and this notion came to bear in the Nollywood movie, Couple of Days. On different levels, the movie speaks to majority of Nigerian couples, touching on issues that affect them.
Couple of Days opens with Jude (Enyinna Nwigwe) actively cheating on his wife, Cynthia (Lilian Esoro-Franklin). Fast forward three years later, they are still together but Jude has resolved to quit his cheating ways.

His friends Dan (Okey Uzoeshi) and Lanre (Demola Adedoyin) have both been dealt different hands. While Dan enjoys a rosy marriage with Nina (Adesua Etomi) Lanre’s wedding to Joke (Kiki Omeili) is more often than not, stormy, at best, cold with Lanre always distant.
At Jude’s behest, and given that it was a holiday weekend, all three couples meet in his sprawling Ibadan residence for a getaway and expectedly, every couple comes with an extra emotional baggage. For example, although Joke’s spending habit puts Lanre in a difficult situation, they have to put up an act for their friends.
As promised, when the couples meet up at Ibadan, their host turned up the heat, delivering on a perfect getaway which includes the best of meals, swimming, bowling and of course the usual girls talk.
Beneath all the fun and excitement lay an incendiary device waiting to go off. Some dark secrets are unearthed; secrets that threaten to pull the carpet from under the feet of the otherwise friendly couples, revealing the mother of all betrayals.
Couple of Days explores the grandeur that the ancient city of Ibadan has become with beautiful locations, aerial shots and whatever trick the director could pull off his sleeves.
Falz performance was not a mistake. Exploring humour as tool for addressing a topic that touches a lot of people made a lot of sense but more could have been done. For instance, Jude’s wife, Cynthia has bipolar disorder and the movie could have served as a medium for enlightening viewers on what it’s all about, causes, treatment and all.
Despite its interesting storyline, Couple of Days at some point became too predictable. It was easy to see that Jude would find solace in Joke’s arms, or that despite their lovey-dovey outlook, Dan and Nina have a can of worms no one knows about.
However, whatever failing the movie had, it made up for in its closure as it leaves a window open for an encore; Couple of Days Later.
