The clock is ticking. The campaigns are in a frenzy. Three days to go and we will know who won and who lost. Will it be Hilary Rodham Clinton, former first lady of the state of Arkansas, former first lady of the United States of America, former Senator representing the great state of New York and former Secretary of State of the United States. This lady has seen government from every side. President Obama says that Hilary Clinton is the most qualified person ever to seek the American presidency and he does not exclude himself or Hilary’s husband, the widely liked William Jefferson Clinton known to the world as Bill Clinton.
On Tuesday, will the American Republican Party celebrate the victory of Donald J. Trump, the Twitter loving, trash talking real estate billionaire, who has been married to three different women and has never held any public office?
The opinion polls in the United States predict a close election. Many around the world must wonder how this can even be close.
Indeed, no one in my household can understand how any American can vote for someone like Donald Trump who boasts about how he sexually assaults women. This is a man who openly talks down on Mexicans and trashes Muslims, Blacks and every other group that is not white male. I have had to do a lot of explaining that many of the people voting for Trump are not doing so because they like Trump. They just hate Obama, a black man who had the temerity to go with his black wife and black daughters and take residence in the White House, not just once but twice! The election of Hilary, Obama’s former Secretary of State, is seen by white extremists as an Obama third term and the thought of that drives them crazy.
The ongoing American presidential campaign must be very revealing to a world that adores America. For most, it has been a window to the American nation and the shocking ignorance and prejudices that still drive the people. The language of the campaign has been most embarrassing with the candidates calling themselves unprintable names. Apart from the Russian people who want a Trump win so that they can laugh at America, the rest of the world seems frightened about the possibility of a Trump in the oval office and his fingers on the nuclear code. The world knows that an America with its massive economy and military might, with a leader that does not understand the world and care for all the people of the world, is a danger to mankind.
Oh! the Russians want Trump and so do most of the American male without university education. On Tuesday, we will know whether the world wins or it is the uneducated white American male and their new Russian friends who will celebrate.
